How Our Yurts Are Made
Checked and Assembled Before Delivery
Every Yurt Workshop yurt is made and assembled in our own workshop. Before delivery, we raise the frame, fit the doors and windows, check the roof poles and test the covers so that any adjustments can be made before the yurt reaches its final site.
This page follows some of that work, from preparing the natural chestnut and tying the wall frames to assembling the oak crown, fitting the roof poles and checking the insulation and covers.
Preparing the Natural Chestnut
The wall frames and roof poles begin with natural chestnut. Each piece is selected, shaped and finished in the workshop, with the natural grain and colour left visible.
Building the Wall Frames
The chestnut wall sections are drilled and tied by hand to form the folding latticework. Hundreds of knots are used across a complete set of wall frames.
Making the Oak Crown
The central crown is made from solid oak and assembled from 24 shaped pieces. Its eight-spoke design supports the roof poles and forms the centre of the finished yurt.
Assembling the Yurt
Once the wall frames are standing, the oak crown is raised and the roof poles are fitted one by one. The poles lock the structure together and transfer the roof load through the crown and walls.
Fitting the Insulation and Covers
For insulated yurts, the natural wool felt is fitted over the completed frame before the outer covers are added. The felt is trimmed to suit the doors, windows and the exact dimensions of the yurt.
Checked Before Delivery
Each yurt is assembled before it leaves the workshop. This allows us to check the frame, crown, roof poles, doors, windows and covers together rather than treating them as separate parts.
Ratna also prepares the assembly information for the finished yurt so that the structure can be raised correctly when it reaches its final site.
