Standard and Traditional Frames
Made from Natural Chestnut
We offer two frame options: our standard-weight frame and our traditional-weight frame.
Both are made from natural chestnut in our workshop, but the traditional frame has a closer lattice and uses more chestnut.
The choice affects the appearance, strength, weight and price of the yurt rather than the basic quality of the construction.
What Does Frame Weight Mean?
By frame weight, we mean the spacing of the wall lattice and the amount of chestnut used in the frame.
A closer lattice creates a denser and stronger wall frame and requires more material and more workshop time.
A wider lattice creates a lighter frame that is easier to handle when the yurt is assembled, dismantled or moved.
Standard-Weight Frame
Our standard-weight frame has wider lattice spacing and uses less chestnut than the traditional frame.
It is strong, practical and lighter to handle when the yurt is assembled, dismantled or moved.
The lattice spacing is approximately 12 inches.
This is the frame chosen for most Yurt Workshop yurts.
Traditional-Weight Frame
The traditional-weight frame has a closer lattice and uses approximately one third more chestnut in the wall frame.
The lattice spacing is approximately 9 inches, giving the wall a denser and more traditional appearance.
The extra chestnut also gives the frame greater strength. It is worth considering for exposed sites, harsher conditions or wherever improved wall-frame strength is important.
Because it uses more material and takes longer to make, it costs more than the standard-weight frame.
Snow conditions should still be considered in relation to the complete structure, the site and the local climate.

Choosing a Frame Weight
For most customers, the standard-weight frame is the practical choice. It gives a strong structure while remaining easier to handle and more economical.
The traditional frame is worth considering where you prefer the denser lattice appearance or want greater strength in the wall frame.
