What Comes with Your Yurt

The Complete Structure
and the Specification You Choose

Every Yurt Workshop yurt is supplied as a complete structural yurt, with the natural chestnut frame, handcrafted oak crown, covers, door frame, tension bands, ropes, pegs and pitching instructions.

The precise contents depend on whether you choose a Standard, Insulated or Glass Wall yurt, together with the doors, windows and other options included in your estimate.

Natural Chestnut Wall Frame

The collapsible lattice wall is supplied in two or more sections, depending on the size of the yurt.

The chestnut poles are stripped, shaped, chamfered, oiled and finished with a light satin varnish.

The wall sections are steam-bent to create the curve of the yurt and tied with strong polyester cord.

The sections interlock when the yurt is pitched and are secured using the traditional wall ties.

Chestnut Roof Poles

The roof poles are made from natural chestnut, straightened with steam and finished in the same way as the wall frame.

A traditional bridle at the wall end secures each roof pole to the lattice.

This allows the pole to be turned through 180 degrees when required and makes assembly more forgiving.

The opposite end fits securely into the mortised openings in the oak crown.

Handcrafted Oak Crown

The eight-spoke crown is made in our workshop from solid oak.

It is assembled from individually shaped pieces and finished with a light satin varnish that leaves the natural grain visible.

The rim is mortised so that the roof poles fit securely into the crown.

The crown can also be painted by hand with a traditional pattern or a design created for your yurt.

Door Frame and Door

Each yurt includes a specially made door frame designed to work with the lattice wall and covers.

The frame has a raised threshold, a low lintel and hand-forged steel rings that secure the lattice on either side.

The door itself depends on the specification shown in your estimate.

Options include solid wooden doors, glazed wooden doors, double glass doors and other arrangements suited to the yurt.

Crown Supports for Larger Yurts

For yurts of 18 feet and larger, a basic unfinished set of crown supports is normally supplied to make pitching the yurt easier and safer.

These supports can be removed once the yurt is standing.

If you want them to remain permanently in place, we can make a more finished version as an additional option.

Proofed Polycotton Covers

The outer covers are made from proofed polycotton, combining cotton with polyester for breathability, strength and improved drying.

The canvas is factory treated for water resistance, fire resistance and rot resistance.

The wall cover includes a PVC lower section to protect the edge of the canvas close to the platform.

The wall and roof covers are made to fit the particular yurt and can be adjusted during pitching.

Crown Cover and Fly Screen

The crown is protected by a removable flexible PVC cover secured with UV-resistant straps.

It can be removed when extra ventilation is wanted.

A fly screen is supplied beneath the crown cover so that the crown can be opened without leaving the interior exposed to insects.

Rigid transparent crown covers are not part of our normal specification because they can cause condensation and other practical problems.

We generally recommend fitted windows where more daylight is wanted.

Tension Bands, Ropes and Pegs

Every yurt is supplied with its structural tension bands, the ropes and webbing needed for pitching, and 40 cm steel pegs.

Pitching Instructions and Support

Full pitching instructions are supplied with the yurt.

We are also available to answer questions if you need guidance while assembling it.

What Is Added to an Insulated Yurt?

An insulated yurt includes everything in the main structural specification, together with a washable fire-retardant inner liner, natural wool felt insulation and an additional outer roof cover.

The wool felt is treated with fire-retardant salts and cut to fit the particular yurt.

The liner, insulation and outer covers are designed as one complete system.

The additional roof cover gives further protection over the insulated roof.

What Is Added to a Glass Wall Yurt?

A Glass Wall yurt uses the insulated specification and adds the fitted doors, windows and wall panels shown in the agreed design.

Because each glass frontage is arranged differently, the precise panels and fittings will be listed in the individual estimate.

Your Individual Specification

The exact contents of your yurt will be listed in your estimate and order specification.

This will show the size, frame weight, covers, insulation, doors, windows and any additional options included.
